MAGPIE project demonstrates that safe ammonia bunkering in ports is possible

The MAGPIE project has successfully demonstrated that ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering is viable within the busy Port of Rotterdam, marking a significant milestone for sustainable shipping. By conducting controlled trials, the initiative proves that ammonia can be transferred safely in active port environments, addressing critical safety concerns regarding toxicity and handling. This EU-funded research provides essential operational data for the maritime industry, offering a blueprint for future bunkering infrastructure as global fleets transition toward carbon-neutral fuels like green ammonia.

Transitioning to ammonia as a marine fuel necessitates strict adherence to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulatory framework, specifically the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code). Compliance departments must ensure that bunkering procedures align with SOLAS Chapter II-2 regarding fire protection and MARPOL Annex VI requirements for emission reductions. Furthermore, classification society guidelines, such as those from DNV or Lloyd’s Register, are essential for certifying bunkering equipment, ensuring that vessels maintain rigorous safety standards during fuel transfer operations.

For chief engineers and second engineers, this development signals a shift in technical training requirements and fuel management protocols. These officers must prepare for advanced bunkering procedures, focusing on leak detection, emergency shutdown systems, and the use of specialized personal protective equipment. As ammonia adoption grows, engine department leaders will need to master new fuel handling technologies and safety management systems to ensure full regulatory compliance and operational safety during every bunkering evolution in port.
