China drives increased bauxite flows, but Guinea’s cutback could drag on growth
20 May 2026
India has emerged as a key destination for bauxite as risks in the Arabian Gulf rise. Global bauxite flows increased by 24% y/y in April. Flows to China increased by 26% y/y. Flows to the UAE appear to have returned in April, but are 72% lower than the same period last year. India continues to ...
Global bauxite trade volumes surged by 24% year-on-year in April, fueled primarily by robust demand from China, which saw a 26% increase in imports. While Guinea’s recent production cutbacks threaten to stifle long-term growth, India has solidified its position as a vital alternative destination amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Arabian Gulf. Major bulk carriers, including Capesize and Panamax vessels, are recalibrating trade routes to ports like Mundra and Dahej, balancing shifting supply chains against volatile regional security risks.
Operational compliance remains critical as these shifting trade patterns impact vessel loading procedures under the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code. Masters must ensure strict adherence to Appendix 3, which classifies bauxite as a Group A cargo prone to liquefaction. Compliance departments must monitor MARPOL Annex VI emission control areas during these longer transit routes to China. Furthermore, adhering to SOLAS Chapter VI, Part A, Regulation 2 is mandatory for verifying cargo mass, ensuring that high-density bauxite shipments do not compromise the structural integrity of the vessel during heavy weather.
Navigating officers and masters must prioritize rigorous cargo monitoring and moisture content testing to mitigate liquefaction risks during transit. Given the increased frequency of bauxite shipments to Indian ports, these officers should review updated stability booklets and ensure that bilge pumping systems are fully operational. Maintaining precise logs of cargo density and stowage factors is essential for safe passage, as fluctuating supply chains demand heightened vigilance regarding vessel trim and overall stability throughout the voyage.
