Den Norske Krigsforsikring for Skib (DNK) has launched an industry-first Assured Positioning, Navigation and Timing (A-PNT) programme to mitigate the rising threat of GNSS signal jamming and spoofing. As vessels transit high-risk zones near the Black Sea or the Strait of Hormuz, reliance on vulnerable GPS signals has become a critical safety concern. By providing members with advanced A-PNT services, DNK aims to safeguard fleet operations against electronic interference that threatens modern maritime navigation and vessel positioning accuracy.
This initiative aligns with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines on cyber risk management and the requirements set forth in SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 19, which mandates the carriage of reliable navigational equipment. For compliance departments, the integration of A-PNT is essential to meet the evolving standards of the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. As classification societies increasingly scrutinize digital resilience, adopting these robust positioning systems ensures that vessels remain compliant with international safety protocols while mitigating legal and operational liabilities associated with navigation failure.
Navigating officers and masters must now prioritize the verification of position data through secondary sensors, moving beyond total reliance on standard GNSS inputs. These professionals should familiarize themselves with A-PNT integration to maintain situational awareness during signal degradation. By understanding the operational limitations of current bridge equipment, deck officers can better execute emergency procedures, ensuring vessel safety and adherence to bridge resource management standards despite the prevalence of electronic signal interference in contested waters.
