Krishnapatnam Doubles Up for Efficiency

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd has achieved a major operational milestone at Krishnapatnam Port by successfully executing its first double banking operation. By allowing two vessels to be moored alongside each other, the port is effectively maximizing berth utilization and reducing vessel turnaround times. This strategic move at the Andhra Pradesh facility aims to eliminate anchorage delays, ensuring that cargo throughput remains fluid while optimizing the existing port infrastructure for high-volume maritime trade in India.

Double banking operations are strictly governed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines, specifically under the provisions of SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 34, regarding safe navigation and berth management. Compliance departments must ensure that these maneuvers adhere to the OCIMF Mooring Equipment Guidelines (MEG4) and local port state control requirements. Proper risk assessments, including fender arrangements and emergency towing procedures, are mandatory to satisfy classification society standards and maintain the safety integrity of both vessels during the ship-to-ship transfer process.

For masters and navigating officers, this shift requires heightened vigilance during berthing and unberthing maneuvers. Navigating officers must be fully conversant with the port’s specific double banking protocols, focusing on precise mooring line tensioning and communication with the pilot station. Masters are responsible for ensuring that the vessel’s safety management system is updated to reflect these complex mooring operations, prioritizing the structural integrity of the shipside and the safety of the deck crew during the entire duration.
