Making Emissions Data Verification Manageable At Scale

The FuelEU Maritime (FEUM) regulation officially entered into force on 1 January 2025, marking a critical shift for the global shipping industry. With the initial deadline for verifying the first year’s emissions data approaching this April, vessel operators must navigate complex reporting requirements. Companies like Maersk and MSC, alongside major ports such as Rotterdam and Singapore, are closely monitoring compliance. Accurate data submission is now mandatory to avoid significant financial penalties and ensure operational continuity for modern merchant fleets.

This regulatory framework operates alongside existing international standards, specifically MARPOL Annex VI, which governs air pollution from ships. While SOLAS Chapter XI-1 focuses on safety management, FuelEU Maritime introduces stringent greenhouse gas intensity limits on the energy used on board. Compliance departments must now integrate FEUM reporting with established EU MRV protocols to ensure seamless data verification. Failure to align these reporting streams can lead to non-compliance notices from classification societies like DNV or Lloyd’s Register, potentially jeopardizing a vessel’s ability to trade within European waters.

The primary burden of this regulatory shift falls upon chief engineers and masters, who must ensure precise fuel consumption logging and bunker delivery note accuracy. These officers are now tasked with meticulous data entry and verification processes to meet the impending April deadline. Navigating officers must also assist in documenting voyage data, ensuring that every port call is recorded correctly. Precise record-keeping is no longer optional but a fundamental requirement for maintaining vessel compliance and professional standards.
