LPG highlighted as a practical pathway to accelerate decarbonisation in LR’s latest Fuel for thought report

28 May 2026

The updated edition of LR’s Fuel for Thought LPG report positions LPG as an immediately deployable, scalable and technically proven fuel pathway capable of delivering meaningful emissions reductions across the maritime sector. Lloyd’s Register has released an updated Fuel for Thought report, positioning Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as a primary, scalable solution for maritime decarbonisation. As the industry faces pressure to reduce carbon intensity, the report highlights LPG’s immediate availability and technical maturity for existing and newbuild fleets. By leveraging established bunkering infrastructure at major global ports like Singapore and Rotterdam, shipowners can achieve significant emissions reductions today, providing a practical transition pathway before zero-carbon fuels reach full commercial viability.

The adoption of LPG as a marine fuel necessitates strict adherence to the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code), which falls under SOLAS Chapter II-1. Compliance departments must ensure that vessel designs meet rigorous safety standards regarding fuel storage, piping systems, and fire protection measures as outlined in MARPOL Annex VI regarding air pollution prevention. Understanding these regulatory frameworks is essential for maintaining class certification and ensuring that new propulsion systems align with evolving IMO greenhouse gas reduction strategies and safety requirements.

For chief engineers and second engineers, the shift toward LPG propulsion requires a comprehensive understanding of low-flashpoint fuel handling and specialized engine maintenance. These technical officers must undergo rigorous training to manage LPG-fuelled machinery, focusing on leak detection, inert gas systems, and emergency shutdown procedures. Staying updated with the latest manufacturer guidelines and classification society requirements is critical to ensuring operational safety and technical compliance during the transition to alternative fuel systems on board.
