ENGINE: East of Suez Bunker Fuel Availability Outlook
12 May 2026
Singapore and Malaysia VLSFO and HSFO availability in Singapore is very tight right now. VLSFO delivery schedules in the port have stretched further, now ranging between 12-14 days, compared to 9-18 days previously. HSFO lead times stand at 9-14 days, from last week’s 4-10-day window. Bunker fuel availability in the East of Suez region is currently facing significant volatility, particularly across Singapore and Malaysia. VLSFO delivery schedules in Singapore have tightened considerably, with lead times now extending to 12-14 days. Similarly, HSFO procurement has become more challenging, with lead times rising to 9-14 days. These supply constraints impact major shipping routes, requiring fleet managers to adjust bunkering strategies for vessels transiting the Malacca Strait to avoid costly operational delays and schedule disruptions.
The ongoing supply tightness necessitates strict adherence to MARPOL Annex VI regulations, which govern the prevention of air pollution from ships. Compliance departments must ensure that fuel procurement aligns with the 0.50% sulfur limit for VLSFO, as mandated by the IMO 2020 global sulfur cap. Furthermore, under SOLAS Chapter II-2, vessels must maintain rigorous fuel management protocols to prevent contamination and ensure compatibility during bunkering operations. Proper documentation and bunker delivery notes are essential to demonstrate regulatory compliance during port state control inspections.
Chief engineers and second engineers must proactively manage fuel inventories and adjust bunkering windows to mitigate the impact of these extended lead times. It is critical for the engine department to monitor fuel quality and consumption rates closely while planning ahead for potential delays in Singapore. By coordinating early with charterers and port agents, engineering teams can ensure that vessel operations remain compliant with environmental standards while maintaining the necessary fuel reserves for safe and efficient transit.
