Shipowner interest in newbuilds remains firm outside Europe

25 May 2026

Taiwan’s Evergreen showed its ambition last week as the seventh-largest shipping line finalised orders for five 24,000 teu LNG dual-fuelled ships at Guangzhou Shipyard International, for between $1.3bn and $1.48bn. Evergreen’s directors approved the newbuilding order in 2025, but the contract was on

Taiwanese shipping giant Evergreen has solidified its market position by finalizing an order for five 24,000 TEU LNG dual-fuelled container ships at Guangzhou Shipyard International. Valued between $1.3bn and $1.48bn, this strategic investment highlights a robust trend in newbuild activity outside of Europe. These massive vessels, designed to optimize global trade routes, reflect a significant shift toward cleaner propulsion technologies as major carriers modernize their fleets to meet evolving international maritime capacity demands and long-term sustainability targets.

The integration of LNG dual-fuel systems necessitates strict adherence to the IGF Code (International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels), which governs the design and operation of these vessels. Furthermore, compliance with MARPOL Annex VI regarding sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions remains critical for operational departments. Classification societies like DNV or ABS will enforce rigorous safety standards under SOLAS Chapter II-1, ensuring that fuel bunkering, storage, and engine room ventilation systems meet stringent international maritime safety and environmental regulations.

For chief engineers and second engineers, these newbuilds represent a major shift in technical operations. These officers must prioritize obtaining specialized training in LNG bunkering procedures and gas-fuelled engine maintenance to ensure compliance with the STCW convention. Understanding the complex fuel gas supply systems and cryogenic safety protocols is now mandatory for senior engine room personnel to maintain vessel efficiency and ensure the safety of the entire crew during transit.
