GTT receives an order from Hanwha Ocean for the tank design of a new LNG Carrier

22 May 2026

GTT announces that it has received, in the second quarter of 2026, an order from the shipyard Hanwha Ocean for the tank design of a new Liquefied Natural Gas Carrier (LNGC), on behalf of a European ship-owner. GTT will design the cryogenic tanks of the vessel, offering a total capacity of 174,000 m3

GTT has officially announced a new contract secured during the second quarter of 2026 from the prominent South Korean shipyard Hanwha Ocean. The order involves the sophisticated cryogenic tank design for a new Liquefied Natural Gas Carrier (LNGC) commissioned by a European ship-owner. Featuring a total cargo capacity of 174,000 m3, this vessel represents the latest in LNG containment technology. This development underscores the ongoing global demand for high-capacity gas carriers to support international energy trade routes.

The design and construction of these cryogenic tanks must strictly adhere to the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code). Furthermore, compliance with SOLAS Chapter II-2 regarding fire protection and MARPOL Annex VI regulations for emission control remains mandatory for modern LNG carriers. Classification societies, such as DNV or ABS, will oversee the structural integrity and safety systems to ensure the vessel meets rigorous international standards for hazardous cargo containment and operational safety.

Chief engineers and second engineers assigned to these modern LNG carriers must familiarize themselves with the specific membrane containment systems integrated into this 174,000 m3 design. Operational teams need to prioritize advanced training in cryogenic cargo handling and boil-off gas management systems. Staying updated on the latest IGC Code amendments is essential for maintaining compliance during port state control inspections and ensuring the safe, efficient transfer of liquefied natural gas during global voyages.
