Greek shipping magnate George Procopiou has successfully offloaded the 2008-built Suezmax tanker Gladiator for approximately $65 million. The 149,944 dwt vessel, constructed at Universal Shipbuilding, has been rebranded as Visund following the transaction. This divestment occurs during a period of record-breaking freight earnings for the tanker sector, highlighting the robust demand for mid-aged tonnage. As global trade routes shift, the sale of this vessel underscores the high valuation currently placed on operational Suezmax assets by international buyers.

The sale of older tonnage like the Gladiator often triggers rigorous inspections under the International Maritime Organization’s Enhanced Survey Programme (ESP) to ensure continued compliance with SOLAS Chapter XI-1 regarding maritime safety. Furthermore, vessels of this vintage must strictly adhere to MARPOL Annex VI regulations concerning sulfur emission limits and the mandatory implementation of the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP).
