GTT receives an order from HD KSOE for the tank design of two new LNG Carriers

28 May 2026

GTT announces that it has received, in the second quarter of 2026, an order from HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE[1]) for the tank design of two new Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers (LNGCs), on behalf of Sonangol, the ship-owner. The LNGCs will be built by the shipyard HD Hyundai

GTT has officially announced a significant contract secured in the second quarter of 2026 from HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) for the advanced tank design of two new Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers (LNGCs). These vessels, commissioned by the ship-owner Sonangol, are currently under construction at the HD Hyundai shipyard. This order underscores the growing global demand for high-capacity LNG transport solutions and highlights the critical role of GTT’s membrane containment systems in modern maritime logistics.

The construction of these LNGCs must strictly adhere to the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code) to ensure structural integrity and cargo safety. Furthermore, compliance with MARPOL Annex VI regarding emission control areas and SOLAS Chapter II-2 regulations for fire protection remains mandatory for these sophisticated gas carriers. Classification society requirements from bodies like DNV or Lloyd’s Register will govern the rigorous testing of the membrane tanks, ensuring that operational safety standards are maintained throughout the vessel's lifecycle.

Chief engineers and second engineers will face increased technical responsibilities regarding the maintenance of these specialized membrane containment systems. These officers must prioritize advanced training in cryogenic cargo handling and leak detection protocols. Understanding the specific thermal stress limits and boil-off gas management systems is essential for ensuring safe, compliant operations. Staying updated on the latest cargo containment technology is vital for career progression and maintaining the high safety standards required on modern LNG carriers.
