DEME wins installation contract for Japanese offshore wind farm

Belgian marine contractor DEME has officially secured a major installation contract for the Oga–Katagami–Akita offshore wind project in Japan. Executed through the Japan Offshore Marine (JOM) joint venture alongside Penta-Ocean Construction, the scope covers complex engineering works and critical vessel chartering for the installation of 21 offshore wind turbines. This development marks a significant expansion for DEME in the Asian renewable sector, utilizing specialized heavy-lift vessels to navigate the challenging coastal conditions near Akita Port to meet project deadlines.

Operational success for this offshore wind project relies heavily on strict adherence to international maritime safety standards. Vessels involved must maintain full compliance with SOLAS Chapter V regarding navigational safety and the IMO’s MODU Code for mobile offshore drilling units, which often informs the safety protocols for wind installation platforms. Furthermore, environmental management must align with MARPOL Annex VI to control emissions during heavy-lift operations. Classification societies like ClassNK will likely oversee the rigorous technical surveys required to certify that all equipment meets Japanese maritime safety regulations.
