The MEA has also advised Indian nationals to avoid travelling to Iran and urged those already there to leave with embassy assistance.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has initiated an urgent strategic operation to relocate 13 merchant vessels currently navigating the volatile Strait of Hormuz. Amidst escalating geopolitical tensions in the Gulf, the government has issued a formal advisory urging Indian nationals to avoid non-essential travel to Iran and seek embassy assistance for immediate departure. This maritime security directive aims to mitigate risks for Indian seafarers operating near high-risk zones, ensuring vessel safety and crew welfare during this period of heightened regional instability.
From an operational standpoint, this directive aligns with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, which mandates rigorous risk assessments under Chapter XI-2 of the SOLAS Convention. Compliance departments must now review their Vessel Security Plans (VSP) to ensure adherence to current Maritime Security Level (MARSEC) protocols. Failure to adjust transit routes or implement enhanced security measures could result in non-compliance with classification society requirements and insurance coverage limitations, potentially jeopardizing the vessel’s seaworthiness certification and international maritime legal standing during transit.
Masters and navigating officers must prioritize situational awareness and bridge watchkeeping standards as they navigate these high-risk corridors. These rank groups are required to maintain constant communication with the Indian Embassy and regional maritime security centers. It is essential for these officers to conduct thorough pre-transit security briefings, verify the functional status of Long-Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) systems, and strictly adhere to the latest Best Management Practices (BMP5) to ensure the safety of the entire crew.
