Global Oil Inventories Are Collapsing at Record Pace, IEA Warns

The International Energy Agency has issued a stark warning as global oil inventories collapse at a record pace, primarily driven by the escalating security crisis in the Strait of Hormuz. This disruption is forcing major tanker operators, including Frontline and Euronav, to reroute vessels away from the Persian Gulf toward longer Cape of Good Hope transits. As crude oil demand surges, the volatility at key transit ports like Fujairah and Ras Tanura is creating unprecedented logistical strain on the global maritime supply chain.
This geopolitical instability necessitates strict adherence to the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, specifically Part A, Section 4, regarding the implementation of Ship Security Plans. Furthermore, vessels transiting high-risk areas must ensure full compliance with SOLAS Chapter XI-2, ensuring that Security Level 2 or 3 protocols are rigorously maintained. Compliance departments must verify that all onboard security equipment, including Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) systems, remains fully operational to meet mandatory IMO reporting requirements and mitigate insurance liability risks during these volatile voyages.
Masters and navigating officers must prioritize enhanced bridge watchkeeping and proactive threat assessment when operating near the Strait of Hormuz. It is essential to strictly follow Best Management Practice (BMP5) guidelines and maintain constant communication with the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). Officers should prepare for extended voyage durations, ensuring that fuel management and crew fatigue mitigation strategies are updated to comply with the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) standards during these high-pressure, long-haul transit operations.
