Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd. (OOCL) has officially named the OOCL Wisdom, marking a significant milestone as the company’s first 24,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container vessel. The naming ceremony took place at the Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (NACKS) shipyard. As the lead ship in a series of seven, the OOCL Wisdom represents a major shift toward sustainable shipping, utilizing green methanol to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining massive cargo capacity on global trade routes.

The deployment of methanol-powered vessels necessitates strict adherence to the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code), as mandated by SOLAS Chapter II-1. Compliance departments must ensure that onboard systems align with MARPOL Annex VI requirements regarding emission control areas. Furthermore, classification society rules for alternative fuels demand rigorous safety management systems. These regulatory frameworks are essential for ensuring that the handling, storage, and bunkering of methanol remain within safe operational parameters, minimizing risks during bunkering and transit.

The introduction of methanol dual-fuel technology directly impacts the daily responsibilities of chief engineers and second engineers. These officers must undergo specialized training in fuel management systems, leak detection, and emergency response protocols specific to low-flashpoint fuels. Engine ratings will also need to adapt to new maintenance procedures for fuel injection systems and bunkering operations. Staying updated with these technical advancements is critical for maintaining vessel safety and operational efficiency in the evolving maritime landscape.
