ZESTAs Launches Global Liquid Hydrogen Alliance to Accelerate Zero-Emission Shipping

18 May 2026

The Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs) today launched the Global Liquid Hydrogen Alliance (Alliance), a new international platform dedicated to advancing pure green hydrogen and liquid hydrogen (LH2) as a deployable, scalable, and commercially viable zero-emission fuel for internati

The Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs) has officially launched the Global Liquid Hydrogen Alliance to accelerate the adoption of liquid hydrogen (LH2) as a primary fuel for international shipping. By focusing on scalable, zero-emission technology, the Alliance aims to transition the global fleet away from traditional heavy fuel oils. This initiative targets the decarbonization of deep-sea vessels, ensuring that green hydrogen infrastructure becomes a commercially viable reality for major maritime hubs and international trade routes by 2030.

This transition aligns with the IMO’s revised Greenhouse Gas Strategy, which mandates significant emission reductions under MARPOL Annex VI regulations. Compliance departments must now prepare for the integration of cryogenic fuel systems that fall under the IGF Code—the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels. As classification societies like DNV and Lloyd’s Register update their rules for LH2 bunkering, shipowners must ensure that newbuild designs adhere to stringent SOLAS Chapter II-2 fire safety requirements to maintain operational certification.

Chief engineers and second engineers will be the primary ranks affected by this technological shift. These officers must prepare for advanced training in handling cryogenic liquid hydrogen, focusing on fuel cell maintenance and leak detection protocols. Engine ratings will also require specialized certification to assist in the safe bunkering and monitoring of LH2 storage tanks. Mastering these complex fuel management systems will soon become a mandatory competency for maintaining technical compliance on modern, zero-emission merchant vessels.
