Korean shipbuilders speed orders on LNG, tankers, lift margins

17 May 2026

Korea’s major shipbuilders have filled about half of their key order targets in just over four months this year. As the Middle East war drags on and momentum grows to reorganize energy supply chains, orders have continued for tankers and liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. Although some initially

South Korean shipbuilders, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries, have secured nearly 50% of their annual order targets within the first four months of 2024. Driven by geopolitical instability in the Middle East and shifting global energy supply chains, demand for high-value LNG carriers and large crude oil tankers has surged significantly. This rapid influx of orders at major yards like Ulsan and Geoje signals a robust recovery for the shipbuilding sector, prioritizing fuel-efficient, eco-friendly vessel designs.

The surge in newbuild activity necessitates strict adherence to the IMO’s International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Annex VI, specifically regarding Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) requirements for new vessels. Furthermore, compliance with SOLAS Chapter II-1 regarding construction and machinery installations remains critical for classification society approval by bodies like KR or DNV. Operations and compliance departments must ensure that all new LNG-powered tonnage meets the latest IGF Code standards to facilitate safe bunkering and cargo handling operations during global transit.

This shipbuilding boom directly impacts the career prospects for masters, chief engineers, and second engineers. These rank groups must prioritize obtaining specialized certifications for LNG-fuelled vessel operations and familiarize themselves with the latest dual-fuel engine management systems. As these sophisticated ships enter the global fleet, officers should focus on advanced training in cryogenic cargo handling and automated engine room monitoring to remain competitive in the evolving maritime labor market.
