Supply contracts and spot bunker sales both on table for Oman project – HutanBio

28 May 2026

UK-based biofuel startup HutanBio plans to expand algae-based biofuel production in Oman to 8,000 mt/year by 2029, with offtaker Wakud open to both long-term shipowner contracts and spot bunker sales, chief executive Manshu Agarwal told ENGINE. Last week, HutanBio announced a partnership with Oman’s

UK-based biofuel startup HutanBio is scaling its algae-based biofuel production in Oman, targeting an output of 8,000 mt/year by 2029. Through a strategic partnership with offtaker Wakud, the project aims to supply the maritime sector with sustainable fuel alternatives. The commercial strategy includes both long-term supply contracts for major shipowners and spot bunker sales at the Port of Duqm. This development marks a significant shift in regional bunkering infrastructure, positioning Oman as a key hub for green maritime energy transitions.

The adoption of HutanBio’s algae-based fuel aligns with the stringent requirements of MARPOL Annex VI, which mandates a reduction in sulfur oxide emissions and promotes the use of alternative low-carbon fuels to meet IMO 2030 and 2050 decarbonization targets. Compliance departments must ensure that these biofuels meet the technical specifications outlined in ISO 8217 standards to maintain engine integrity. Furthermore, adherence to SOLAS Chapter II-2 regarding fire safety and fuel storage remains critical, as the transition to biofuels requires rigorous fuel management systems and updated bunker delivery notes to satisfy port state control inspections.

Chief engineers and second engineers must prepare for the operational integration of these algae-based biofuels, as fuel switching requires careful monitoring of viscosity and potential microbial growth. Engine room teams should review fuel compatibility protocols and ensure that fuel oil service tanks are properly maintained to prevent filter clogging. Understanding the specific heating requirements and combustion characteristics of these new blends is essential for maintaining optimal engine performance and ensuring full regulatory compliance during bunkering operations in the Middle East.
