George Economou-controlled TMS Cardiff Gas has significantly expanded its fleet by ordering two new LNG carriers from Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea. The contract, valued at approximately KRW 750.5bn ($505.6m), marks a major milestone in the Greek owner’s aggressive maritime expansion strategy. These modern dual-fuel vessels are designed to meet the rising global demand for liquefied natural gas transport, further strengthening the company’s position as a key player in the international gas shipping sector during this period of growth.

These newbuilds must adhere to the stringent requirements stipulated under the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code). Furthermore, compliance with MARPOL Annex VI regarding nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide emissions is mandatory for these vessels to operate in Emission Control Areas. Classification societies will enforce strict adherence to SOLAS Chapter II-1 regulations concerning machinery and electrical installations, ensuring that safety and environmental standards are maintained throughout the vessel's operational lifecycle.

The introduction of these advanced LNG carriers will directly impact the daily responsibilities of masters and navigating officers. These professionals must undergo specialized training in cryogenic cargo handling and advanced gas management systems to ensure safe operations. Masters and navigating officers should prioritize familiarization with the specific automation software installed by Samsung Heavy Industries to maintain compliance with safety management systems and optimize vessel performance during complex loading and discharge procedures at global gas terminals.
