Study: Humans Are Still the “Integration Layer” in Freight Operations Despite AI Expansion
12 May 2026
Despite years of investment in digital platforms and AI, freight operations still depend heavily on humans manually connecting disconnected systems, according to a new industry report released by Deep Current, a Germany-based AI company building the pre-operational data flow infrastructure layer for
A recent industry report from Deep Current reveals that despite significant investments in AI and digital platforms, human intervention remains the primary integration layer in global freight operations. Even with advanced software deployed at major hubs like the Port of Rotterdam and the Port of Singapore, disconnected data silos force personnel to manually bridge gaps between systems. This reliance on manual data entry persists across modern fleets, highlighting a critical bottleneck in the digital transformation of the global maritime supply chain.
This operational dependency complicates compliance with the IMO’s International Safety Management (ISM) Code, specifically regarding the effective flow of safety-critical information between ship and shore. Under SOLAS Chapter XI-1, Regulation 5, the continuous maintenance of the Continuous Synopsis Record requires accurate, real-time data reporting that current fragmented systems often fail to automate. For fleet managers and compliance departments, this reliance on human oversight increases the risk of reporting errors, potentially impacting Port State Control inspections and adherence to MARPOL Annex VI emission monitoring requirements.
For navigating officers and masters, this reality means that digital automation has not yet reduced the administrative burden of reporting. These rank groups must prioritize meticulous data verification to ensure that automated logs align with manual entries. Navigating officers should focus on cross-referencing electronic chart display systems with manual voyage reports to prevent discrepancies. Ultimately, until infrastructure matures, human oversight remains the final safeguard against technical failures in vessel data management and regulatory reporting protocols.
