Bunker supply uncertainty and box shipping’s (early?) peak season

Fuel supply risks could determine how early and how sharply container shipping’s peak season hits this year, with Asia-Europe most exposed if the Strait of Hormuz disruption drags on, according to Freightos head of research Judah Levine. He said shipping had so far avoided the severe fuel shortages
Container shipping faces a volatile peak season as fuel supply uncertainties loom over global trade routes. Freightos head of research Judah Levine warns that ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz could severely impact Asia-Europe shipping lanes, potentially triggering early capacity crunches. While major carriers like Maersk and MSC have largely avoided acute fuel shortages so far, the risk of bunker supply instability remains high. Port congestion in Singapore and Rotterdam could further exacerbate these logistical challenges throughout the third quarter.
Bunker procurement and fuel quality remain strictly governed by MARPOL Annex VI, which mandates compliance with sulfur emission limits and fuel oil quality standards. Under SOLAS Chapter II-2, Regulation 4, vessels must maintain rigorous documentation regarding fuel oil storage and delivery notes to ensure operational safety and environmental compliance. For compliance departments, the current supply uncertainty necessitates enhanced monitoring of bunker delivery notes and fuel testing protocols to prevent potential engine damage or regulatory penalties during port state control inspections in key maritime hubs.
Chief engineers and second engineers must prioritize fuel management and bunker quality testing as supply chains tighten. These officers should conduct thorough onboard fuel analysis and ensure strict adherence to fuel changeover procedures when entering Emission Control Areas. Maintaining detailed records of fuel consumption and bunker quality is essential to mitigate the risk of engine failure or non-compliance penalties during this period of heightened logistical volatility and potential fuel grade inconsistency.
