Biofuel Bunker Snapshot: Conventional VLSFO prices weigh on B30 blend prices

Rotterdam’s B30-VLSFO (POMEME) bunker prices have experienced a notable decline, dropping by approximately $59/mt over the past week. This downward trend is primarily driven by a corresponding fall in conventional VLSFO prices at the ARA hub, where Prima Markets reported a $16/mt decrease in POMEME barge premiums. As shipping companies increasingly integrate biofuels to meet decarbonization targets, the volatility in these blend prices remains a critical factor for fleet managers monitoring operational costs across major European ports.

The adoption of B30 biofuel blends must align with MARPOL Annex VI regulations, which govern air pollution and the sulfur content of marine fuels. Under the IMO’s Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) framework, vessels are under pressure to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, making biofuels a viable compliance strategy. Classification societies, including DNV and Lloyd’s Register, emphasize that engine modifications or specific fuel handling procedures may be required to ensure compliance with SOLAS Chapter II-2 regarding fire safety and fuel quality standards during bunkering operations.

Chief engineers and second engineers must remain vigilant regarding fuel compatibility and storage stability when utilizing B30 blends. These officers should ensure that bunker delivery notes are meticulously verified and that fuel samples are retained for testing to prevent engine damage or potential non-compliance issues. Understanding the price fluctuations of POMEME-based fuels is essential for managing daily fuel consumption budgets and ensuring that the vessel maintains optimal performance while adhering to strict environmental maritime regulations.
