Countdown: CEO reflections on IMO progress and regulation’s role in maritime decarbonization
26 May 2026
When we started the Center in 2020, the industry was asking whether decarbonizing shipping was possible. Today, the ecosystem is no longer asking that question. Companies have set ambitious targets and are implementing low-emissions technologies in their fleets. We have moved from asking whether shi
The maritime industry has reached a pivotal turning point in its journey toward net-zero emissions, as highlighted by recent reflections from the Global Maritime Forum. Since 2020, the focus has shifted from questioning the feasibility of decarbonization to the active implementation of low-emissions technologies across global fleets. Major shipping companies are now integrating dual-fuel vessels and energy-saving devices to meet stringent environmental targets, marking a departure from traditional heavy fuel oil operations toward sustainable maritime logistics and cleaner propulsion systems.
Central to this transition is the enforcement of MARPOL Annex VI, which mandates strict limits on sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions. Compliance departments must now navigate the complexities of the IMO’s Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) to ensure vessels remain operational within international waters. These regulatory frameworks, supported by classification society requirements from bodies like DNV or Lloyd’s Register, demand rigorous data reporting and technical upgrades to align with the IMO’s 2030 and 2050 decarbonization roadmaps.
For chief engineers and second engineers, this regulatory shift necessitates a deep understanding of new fuel management systems and engine optimization protocols. These officers must prioritize continuous training on alternative fuel handling and emission monitoring equipment to maintain vessel compliance. Staying updated on the latest IMO technical circulars is essential for managing engine room efficiency and ensuring that all onboard systems meet the evolving environmental performance standards required for modern merchant navy operations.
