GTT announces that it has been selected by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE[1]), on behalf of the ship-owner BW LNG, for the tank design of the world’s first large-scale LNG[2] carriers featuring a three-cargo-tank configuration. GTT has officially secured a contract from HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering to design the cargo containment systems for four innovative large-scale LNG carriers commissioned by BW LNG. These vessels represent a significant industry milestone as the first to utilize a three-cargo-tank configuration, departing from the traditional four-tank layout. This design optimization aims to enhance volumetric efficiency and reduce boil-off rates, marking a major technological advancement for the global liquefied natural gas shipping fleet and maritime engineering standards.

The implementation of this three-tank design must strictly adhere to the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk, known as the IGC Code. Compliance with SOLAS Chapter II-2 regarding fire protection and structural integrity remains paramount for these new builds. Furthermore, the design must satisfy stringent classification society requirements for sloshing analysis and fatigue life assessment. These regulatory frameworks ensure that the structural modifications do not compromise the safety of the vessel or the containment of hazardous cryogenic cargoes during transit.

Chief engineers and second engineers will face significant operational shifts when managing these three-tank configurations. They must prioritize advanced training on new cargo handling systems, specifically focusing on updated ballast management and boil-off gas control protocols. Understanding the unique stress distribution of larger tanks is critical for monitoring structural health. These officers should proactively familiarize themselves with the specific technical manuals and digital monitoring tools provided by GTT to ensure safe and efficient cargo operations onboard.
