Indian Navy To Acquire Advanced Unmanned Mine Counter-Measure Systems For Future Minesweepers

India’s last minesweeper was the Soviet-built Natya-class INS Kozhikode, decommissioned in 2019 without a replacement.

The Indian Navy is set to bolster its maritime security capabilities by acquiring advanced Unmanned Mine Counter-Measure (UMCM) systems for its future fleet of minesweepers. This strategic move addresses a critical capability gap that has persisted since the 2019 decommissioning of the Soviet-built Natya-class INS Kozhikode. By integrating autonomous underwater vehicles and remote-controlled sweep gear, the Navy aims to modernize its coastal defense, ensuring that vital sea lanes near major ports like Mumbai and Visakhapatnam remain clear of underwater threats.

The integration of these UMCM systems must align with international maritime safety standards, particularly those outlined in SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 34, which mandates safe navigation and voyage planning. Furthermore, compliance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines on autonomous systems is essential for operational certification. Compliance departments must ensure that these unmanned platforms adhere to strict classification society requirements regarding remote control reliability and sensor redundancy. Adopting these technologies requires rigorous adherence to safety management systems to mitigate risks during complex mine-clearing operations in congested Indian waters.

This technological shift directly impacts the operational responsibilities of navigating officers and masters. These professionals must now undergo specialized training in remote vessel operation and sensor data interpretation to manage autonomous systems effectively. Navigating officers will need to master the integration of UMCM data into existing bridge systems, ensuring that mine-clearing maneuvers comply with international collision regulations. Staying updated on these digital warfare tools is now a prerequisite for career progression within the modern Indian maritime sector.
