India’s Pharma Logistics Eyes the Patent Cliff Opportunity

26 May 2026

A wave of drug patent expirations is set to unleash a surge in global generic medicine demand — and India’s logistics industry is preparing for a major role. The global pharmaceutical sector faces a significant patent cliff, triggering a surge in generic drug manufacturing that positions India’s logistics industry as a critical node in the global supply chain. As major drug patents expire through 2028, Indian ports like Nhava Sheva and Mundra are gearing up for increased refrigerated container traffic. Shipping lines such as Maersk and MSC are optimizing their reefer vessel fleets to handle this volume, ensuring that temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical exports reach international markets efficiently and securely.

Transporting these high-value pharmaceuticals requires strict adherence to the IMDG Code and specific temperature-controlled protocols mandated under SOLAS Chapter VI, Regulation 5-5. Compliance departments must ensure that reefer containers are properly monitored throughout the voyage to meet the stringent quality standards required for generic drug exports. Furthermore, adherence to MARPOL Annex VI regarding emission controls during port stays is essential, as classification societies like DNV and Lloyd’s Register enforce rigorous inspections on vessels carrying specialized medical cargo to ensure operational safety and regulatory compliance.

This shift in trade volume directly impacts the responsibilities of chief engineers and second engineers. These officers must prioritize the maintenance of reefer monitoring systems and auxiliary power generators to prevent cargo spoilage. Engine room teams must ensure uninterrupted power supply to container plugs, as any fluctuation in temperature can lead to significant financial losses and regulatory non-compliance. Maintaining detailed logs of reefer performance is now a critical task for the entire engineering department during these high-stakes voyages.
