Tankers: China’s Crude Oil Imports on the Rise

29 May 2026

Despite the disruptions of the past couple of months, China’s crude oil imports have edged higher so far in 2026. In its latest weekly report, shipbroker Banchero Costa said that “after a marginal decline in 2024, when global crude oil loadings decreased by -0.2% y-o-y, things picked up in 2025, wit

China’s crude oil imports have demonstrated resilience in early 2026, marking a positive shift for the global tanker market despite recent geopolitical disruptions. According to data from Banchero Costa, the sector is rebounding following a slight contraction in 2024. VLCCs and Suezmax tankers are seeing increased activity at key Chinese ports like Ningbo-Zhoushan and Qingdao. This upward trend in crude loadings signals a robust recovery in demand, necessitating efficient fleet deployment and precise voyage planning for tanker operators worldwide.

The surge in tanker activity requires strict adherence to MARPOL Annex I regulations regarding the prevention of oil pollution during cargo operations. Compliance with SOLAS Chapter II-1 concerning machinery and electrical installations remains critical for vessels navigating high-traffic Chinese waters. Furthermore, classification society requirements from bodies like DNV or ABS demand rigorous maintenance of inert gas systems and crude oil washing equipment. Ensuring these systems meet IMO standards is essential for vessel safety, environmental protection, and avoiding costly port state control detentions during inspections.

This uptick in crude oil trade directly impacts the operational workload for masters and navigating officers. These professionals must prioritize precise passage planning and strict compliance with ship-to-ship transfer protocols in congested anchorage areas. Navigating officers should focus on enhanced bridge resource management to handle increased vessel traffic near major Chinese terminals. Maintaining updated electronic chart display and information systems remains vital for ensuring safe navigation and operational efficiency during this period of heightened tanker activity.
