Centrica Energy has officially secured the ISCC Trader with Storage certification, marking a significant milestone in the international trade of bio-LNG. This accreditation allows the UK-based energy trader to supply compliant, sustainable bio-LNG at any ISCC-certified terminal across the European Union. By integrating this renewable fuel into the maritime supply chain, Centrica Energy aims to support the decarbonization of international shipping fleets, providing a scalable alternative to traditional fossil-based LNG for vessels operating in European waters.

The adoption of bio-LNG aligns with the stringent requirements of MARPOL Annex VI, which mandates the reduction of sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions from ships. Furthermore, compliance with the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and the FuelEU Maritime regulation necessitates that operators monitor the carbon intensity of their energy sources. For compliance departments, this certification ensures that the fuel bunkered meets the sustainability criteria required to avoid heavy penalties, effectively bridging the gap between current operational standards and future environmental mandates.

Chief engineers and second engineers must now familiarize themselves with the fuel handling protocols and documentation associated with bio-LNG bunkering. These officers need to verify that the bunker delivery note specifies the ISCC certification status to ensure accurate reporting for carbon accounting. As the industry shifts toward greener alternatives, engine room teams must remain vigilant regarding fuel compatibility and the specific technical requirements for managing bio-blended fuels during ship-to-ship or terminal-to-ship transfer operations.
