Industry Shipping Bodies Unite to Issue Critical Hormuz Strait Safety Guidance
27 May 2026
With hundreds of ships trapped or delayed, BIMCO and five major maritime organisations have published urgent navigational and security guidance to help shipowners manage transit risks in one of the world’s most contested waterways. As the geopolitical crisis in the Persian Gulf continues to unfold,
BIMCO, alongside ICS, INTERTANKO, INTERCARGO, OCIMF, and CLIA, has released urgent security guidance for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Persian Gulf, this advisory aims to mitigate risks for merchant ships facing delays or potential seizure. With critical chokepoints like the Port of Fujairah and the Strait of Hormuz becoming high-risk zones, shipowners must now implement enhanced bridge procedures and security protocols to protect crews and assets during these volatile voyages.
Compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code remains the primary regulatory framework for these operations. Under SOLAS Chapter XI-2, vessels are required to maintain a high state of readiness, ensuring that the Ship Security Plan (SSP) is fully updated to reflect current threat levels. Furthermore, adherence to the International Safety Management (ISM) Code is essential for operational continuity. Classification societies and flag states are urging operators to conduct rigorous risk assessments, ensuring that all security measures align with international maritime law and regional safety mandates to avoid potential insurance or legal liabilities.
Masters and navigating officers bear the primary responsibility for implementing these new security measures during transit. These professionals must conduct thorough pre-voyage briefings, maintain heightened radar surveillance, and strictly adhere to the latest BMP5 guidelines. It is vital for bridge teams to monitor VHF communications closely and report any suspicious activity to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) immediately to ensure the safety of the vessel and its crew throughout the passage.
